Layering actives can get results — or get you irritated skin — depending on how you do it. Here's a simple, no-stress way to think about it.
The golden rule: don't stack everything at once
Piling multiple strong actives onto your skin the same night is the fastest route to redness and flaking. When in doubt, use fewer things well rather than everything at once.
Which pairings play nicely
- Hydrators + anything. Gentle hydrating steps support your skin barrier and make stronger actives more comfortable.
- Niacinamide + most things. Niacinamide is famously easygoing and pairs well with almost everything.
- Peptides + retinol. Peptides are gentle and complement retinol — a comfortable duo for smoother, firmer-looking skin. (More in our retinol vs. peptides guide.)
Which to space apart
- Retinol. Give it its own night, or at least don't stack it with other strong actives. If you're new to it, start slow — see retinol for beginners.
- Multiple exfoliating actives. Using several at once is a common irritation trigger.
Order of application
A simple rule: thinnest to thickest. Cleanse, then watery essences and treatments, then heavier creams, then sunscreen in the morning. Sheet masks slot in as your treatment step.
An easy way to simplify
This is exactly why OLYVIA masks pair two complementary actives per set — the pairing is done for you, so you get layered care without the guesswork. You can browse the sets here.
If in doubt, patch test
Trying something new? Patch-test on a small area first, and introduce one new active at a time so you know what your skin is responding to.
